ABOUT KOLKATA

Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It has been nicknamed the City of Palaces and also the City of Joy. The commercial capital of East India in British Priode (then known as Calcutta), located on the east bank of the Hooghly River. It has approximately 16 million residents which is third largest in India. During British Raj Kolkata was the capital of India till the year 1911. In spite of its urbanization problems Kolkata is still a cultural and Educational center of East. It is also known for its science, and politics centers, making it the 13th most populous urban area in the world. The city is also classified as the eighth largest urban agglomeration in the world.

In the late 17th century, the three villages that predated Kolkata were ruled by the Nawab of Bengal under Mughal suzerainty. After the Nawab granted the East India Company a trading license in 1690, the area was developed by the Company into an increasingly fortified mercantile base. Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah occupied Kolkata in 1756 after company started evading taxes and due to increasing militarization of the fort, the East India Company retook it in the following year and in 1793 assumed full sovereignty after Mughal governorship (Nizamat) was abolished. Under East India Company and later under the British Raj, Kolkata served as the capital of India until 1911.

Kolkata is visited by thousands of national and international tourists every year. The celebration and festivity of the city are well known. People from round the globe come here to watch the celebration of Durga Pooja and other regional fairs, like Gangasagar and Kenduli Mela. The best time to visit Kolkata is in its festival season i.e. around October, when the atmosphere is colorful, with pleasing weather and festive mood all around.

As the summer of Kolkata is very hot and humid, it is nearly impossible for tourists to roam around with ease during this season in the city. In monsoons, the torrential rains can perturb the normal lifestyle of people here, so tourist expeditions are a bit difficult. The best and the most favored season for coming to Kolkata is winter i.e. October to February. This is the best time for visiting Kolkata as there is minimal humidity and perspiration. Even the temperature is in a pleasing range, around 15°C.
